Brunton Miners D-Light Compass

Brunton Miners D-Light Compass is the ideal tool for mining geologists to use in low-light environments. The compass is a version of the Com-pro model, which has luminescent capabilities.

Body construction

The construction of the ComPro and the D-Light intends to cut down on weight for the user. As such the outer case is of a lightweight composite material. Cutting down the weight significantly while remaining rugged for outdoor and underground use. However, the internal mechanisms remain the same, high-quality and accurate pieces one would expect from Brunton. Particularly, the parts found within the standard Transit models. However, the D-light model is even lighter, shaving off over 40 grams in weight.

Needle Mechanism

As with many Brunton models, a precision NdFeB disc magnet provides accurate readings and resists demagnetisation. The needle can be balanced for any magnetic zone, as per the options available. The needle also has induction dampening, which allows the needle slow and settle in the correct direction quickly. Thanks in part to sapphire jewel bearings allowing for smooth movement through the compass use. As with many such instruments, the needle features a locking mechanism button, allowing users to press a button that will hold the needle in place. Therefore allowing users to take readings in awkward positions, locking the needle, and bringing the compass back for reading.

Clinometer Arm

The clinometer arm of the Brunton Miners D-Light Compassis manually operated. Utilising a spirit level, users can swing the arm left or right until level, with 90 degrees each way. The arm will hold its position, no matter the compass’s angle, which users can then pull back and read from.

Sighting Mirror

Like most Brunton transits, the D-Light also features both, a short and long-sight mechanism. The shortsight is present on the lid and folds away when not in use. While the long sight uses Brunton’s well-known ‘Buckhorn’ style to complete sighting and triangulation. A mirror is present on the inside of the lid, which enables sighting and measurement of bearings and vertical angles.

Luminescence

A unique feature of the Brunton Miners D-Light Compass is its illumination capabilities. A simple push button activates an illumination cycle, lasting 60 seconds. This action allows the electroluminescent panels to illuminate the azimuth ring, baseplate, and bubble levels. Making reading of directions or angles easy in low light conditions. The material contains no radioactive materials and is powered by a non-magnetic, easy-to-source 3V battery.

Overall, an excellent addition to Bruntons’ quality range of instruments. Providing users with a lightweight instrument for fieldwork. Coming in at 150 grams, while measuring 8 x 7 x 3.4 cm. which is just as adept to low light conditions. Making is particularly suitable for those engaging in work in underground mining, geoengineering such as tunneling, or those undertaking caving expeditions. It comes as standard with a leather case with belt loop. Available in both Azimuth or Quadrant faces.
